      CONCEPT:

      • Heating effect of electric current: When a current is flowing in a circuit having resistance there is heat dissipation due to the resistance. This is called the heating effect of electric current.

      The heat dissipated is given by:

      Heat (H) = I2 R t

      Work done (W) = Heat (H) = Energy consumed (E) = Power (P) × Time taken (t)

      Where I = the current flowing in the circuit, R = the resistance of the circuit, and t = the time taken

      CALCULATION:

      Given,

      Power = 100 W, Time = 8 hours per day

      We know that,

      Power (P) = Energy (E)/Time (t)

      Power = 100 W = 0.1 KW

      0.1 = E/8

      Energy (E) = 0.8 KWh = 0.8 Unit in one day

      Additional Information

      • 1 unit of electric energy: When a one-kilowatt load works for 1 hour then the energy consumed is called 1 unit of electricity.

      1 Unit of electricity = 1 KWh = 1000 Watt-hour = 3.6 × 106 J

      1 Kilo-watt = 1000 Watt

      1 Hp = 1 horsepower = 746 Watt (W)
